The UK Independence Party (Ukip) has launched its own debt website, which it says will "educate" the public about what it believes are the real causes of UK personal debt. High levels of personal debt, insolvencies and missed payments, which can damage consumers' credit ratings, have caused widespread concern, with the Conservatives responding to the situation with their own anti-debt website. While the Conservative site, www.sort-it.co.uk, focuses on how consumers can overcome the individual within who tempts people to spend unwisely, the Ukip site focuses on the question of house prices, arguing that mortgages account for 82 per cent of the debt compared to one per cent for credit cards, thus making the Conservative concentration on credit cards an irrelevance. Speaking about the launch of the site, Ukip's Chad Noble said: "The British people are struggling under the weight of enormous mortgage payments caused by uncontrolled house price inflation," which he said contributed to a situation where many people had to borrow "just to survive". He also criticised Labour for not doing enough to curb the housing boom. A recent survey by The Debt Counsellors showed that credit cards were a factor in 91 per cent of bad debt cases.
