The British Bankers' Association (BBA) has issued a series of tips to help consumers avoid becoming victims of credit card fraud, which costs £1.2 million every day. It has identified carelessness as being a key trend in allowing criminals easy access to information. Common errors to avoid include writing down passwords and pin numbers, which should be memorised instead, customers letting cards out of sight, enabling unscrupulous traders to note the details and failing to keep anti-virus computer software up to date. One particularly common failing is the throwing away of documents without shredding them. Angela Knight, chief executive designate at the BBA, advised consumers to be more aware and take precautions. "When you use it - keep it secret. When you are done - shred it," she said. "Too often you see people just throw away in the bin the kind of information fraudsters can use."
